TWO UNORIANS CLAIM TOP 5 FINISH IN THE 27TH PSQ

Besting thirty contenders in a battle of mathematical prowess, freshmen engineering students Francis II Mapa and Jhon Daived Castillo clinched second and fifth place, respectively, in the 27th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) – Negros Occidental Provincial Championship, held at Miguel Hall, University of St. La Salle last October 25. Civil engineering students Mapa and Paul Pescos, and Castillo from the chemical engineering program represented the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos (UNO-R) for this year’s PSQ where quizzers competed in three formidable rounds— each round having 10 questions. Joined by 30 freshmen students from ten colleges and universities, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – Negros Occidental spearheaded the quiz bee with the theme “The Search for the Country’s Young Statistics Whizzes.” Mapa will advance to the Regional Competition as one of the three representatives of the province on November 10 with Engr. Rose Jean Rosco. “The most challenging part was handling pressure while the quiz bee was starting, knowing that I’m competing with the top students of their respective schools. I’m grateful to win and I’ll do my best in the regionals,” Mapa shared in a press interview. Fifth placer Castillo expressed when asked about the most challenging encounter they had during the competition, “Despite probability and statistics being introduced to us in the previous years, it is still challenging especially that there are new topics and more trivial facts to be remembered.” The representatives were mentored by Engr. Rose Jean Rosco, Engr. Angelica Polana, and Engr. Daniel Pollentes. PSQ is an annual event by the PSA to hone proficiency and expertise for freshmen students in the field of statistics.
