UCDO recognized Bantay Kahoy and partners at Tree Museum Day

CCJE Secretary Pamela Delgado topped UCDO’s Search for Ten Outstanding Bantay Kahoy and received her EDC memorabilia umbrella from EDC SNGP/NNGP Resident Vice-President Dwight Maxino.

Other winners were Ms. Rowela Javier, Ms. Virgie Tek-ing, and Ms. Dana Banilla of Human Resource Management Office, Mr. Ruby Ravelista and Mr. Ildefonso Obligado of Property Office, Atty. Dolores Nalumen of College of Arts and Sciences, Ms. Cristina Su-ay of Accounting Office, Ms. Jean Pauyon of CCJE, and OIC Lino Sumbillo of Student Development and Placement Center.

UNO-R also recognized its partners with the Certificate of Appreciation to EDC, EDC-SNGP/NNGP, Sen. Villar and Villar Foundation, Bacolod City Water District and Virlanie Foundation-Bacolod.

A 20-minute video documentary on the tree museum from its beginnings up to the present made by the DSA/PRO was presented. CAS Faculty Gloria Fabrigas spoke on the results of her comparative study on the CO2 fixation of the trees at the museum with those in two other countries. EDC CSR Deputy Manager Tracy Peralta gave a short overview on its two new projects at UNO-R, the Corn Cart for Scholarships at UNO-R and the Drip Irrigation which EDC would donate to UNO-R. UCDO Supv Mely Flores launched the Philippine Heritage Tree Museum and Sustainability Mini-Eco Park Project, and the Solar LED Lamps and Eco-Park Bench Campaigns for support from the READS alumni and the UNO-R alumni in cooperation with the Scholarship’s Office and the Blue and Gold Alumni Association.

VP-Students Welfare Fr. Louie Gabinete, OAR, welcomed the participants and stressed the significance of the care of the environment, while DSA Director Dr. Carlos Legaspi presented the different activities of the event’s program.

Maxino led the 10 attendees from EDC, while MMUFARMAC Chairman Serapio Balbin was joined by two other EDC-supported farmer’s coop officials. In his partner’s message, Maxino thanked UNO-R for hosting MMUFARMAC’s Corn Cart for scholarships in the university.

Bacolod City Mayor and Congressman-elect Evelio Leonardia despite his hectic schedule and his personal call that he was not sure if he would be able to come, arrived towards the end of the program. When asked to give a short message, he said UNO-R is the first school he visited after his proclamation as congressman, and he promised he would support UNO-R’s efforts to promote the environment and heritage trees. He also visited the heritage tree, Malabayabas (Trinopsis decorticota), which was planted by his representative in behalf of the Mayor’s Office.

Other UNO-R partners present were the representatives from Senator-elect Cynthia and Villar Foundation led by Jona Ramos, BACIWA led by its Engineering Dept. Manager Jenelyn Gemora, and Virlanie Foundation-Bacolod led by its Program Manager Sara Vial. From the media partners were Negros Daily Bulletin, ABS-CBN News-Bacolod, GMA News-Bacolod, and Julius Mariveles, the interim chairman of National Union of Journalists in the Philippines-Negros.

Attending the event from the UNO-R community were the UCDO unit coordinators representing the university’s different colleges and offices, the members of the Bantay Kahoy, and the students led by incoming UNOSSGO President John Floyd Abrico and nine other officers for SY 2013-2014.

The academic lay administrators who also gave their support were CoEn Dean Christopher Taclobos, CoN Dean Sheilah Arnibal, CCJE Dean Jasmin Parreño, CAS Dean Nieves Pepito, and Dean Ofelia Posecion showed their support. From the non-academic group were University Secretary to the President’s Office Judy Legaspi, Sports Moderator Ericson Rios, and SDPC OIC Lino Sumbillo.

Because of the rains, the participants had to move from the UNO-R Covered Court for the first part of the event’s program to the Earth Chapel for the Thanksgiving Mass and back again to the Covered Court for the last part of the program.
