Guidelines for Written Comprehensive Examination and Thesis/Dissertation Proposal and Oral Defense

 

 

I. Written Comprehensive Examination

A. Requirements

Master’s Degree – Completion of academic requirements with a weighted average of at least

                           2.0

Doctoral Degree – Completion of academic requirements with a weighted average of at least

                           1.75

B. Scope

  1. Basic/Core Courses     –   Cluster I
  2. Field Specialization     –   Cluster II
  3. Electives or Cognates  –   Cluster III

C. Schedule

3 times every academic year

          November

          March

          June

D. Duration

3 days

E. Application

1 month before the scheduled exam

F. Fee

Master’s Degree – P 2,500.00

Doctoral Degree – P 3,000.00

G. Criteria for Evaluation

Depth of problem analysis       –    35%

Organization of Ideas             –    25%

Coverage of Subject Matter      –    25%

Ability to Express                    –    15%

Total                                        100%

 

          Master’s Degree    –    89 – 100        Pass

                                    –     88 – below     Failure

          Doctoral Degree    –     93 – 100       Pass

                                    –     92 – below     Failure

  • A second written Comprehensive Examination maybe taken by those who failed

 

 

II. Thesis Dissertation Proposal and Oral Defense

A.     Title Hearing

  1. Certification of completion of comprehensive exam
  2. Certification from the registrar that all and other requirements are met
  3. Submission of three titles for the study to be defended to the committee
  4. Approval of the title by the committee
  5. Assigning of adviser by the dean through letter considering the preference of the student

B.     Proposal Defense

  1. Certification of the dean of the Approved Title
  2. Letter request for proposal defense endorsed by the adviser with the documents (5 copies for masteral: 7 copies for Doctoral) to be submitted two weeks before the scheduled defense.
  3. Proposal Defense fees to be submitted to the Graduate School Secretary a day before the scheduled defense.

                                    Master’s Degree – P 10,000.00

                                    Doctoral Degree – P 15,000.00

              4.    Composition of panel of Examiners:

                                    Master’s Degree – 5 members

                                    Doctoral Degree – 7 members

              5.    Panel’s suggestion/recommendations should be followed in the preparation of the final

                     paper

C.     Oral Defense

  1. Letter of the adviser that his/her advisee is ready for oral defense with the thesis/dissertation (5 copies for masteral, 7 copies for doctoral) to be submitted two weeks before the scheduled defense
  2. Oral Defense fees to be submitted to the Graduate School Secretary before the scheduled defense.

                                   Master’s Degree – P 10,000.00

                                   Doctoral Degree – P 15,000.00

              3.   Composition of Panel of Examiners

                                   Master’s Degree – 5 members

                                   Doctoral Degree – 7 members

              4.   Judgment of Panel of Examiners

                                   Passed without revision

                                   Passed with minor revision

                                   Major revision with re – oral/conference

              5.   Submission of Final Thesis/Dissertation with approval sheet and endorsement of the

                    adviser

                                   Master’s Degree – 1 month

                                   Doctoral Degree – 1 month
