Two colleges made it to the final round of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos debate contest held January 18 at the university auditorium. These were the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) represented by Nichol Malata, Gail Fernandez, Katherine Cobing, Jojie Talatala and Wilmer Fellera standing for the negative side and the College of Education (COEd) embodied by Junell Lupo, Raizza Amor Alapar, Edilvonne Yanson, Peace Flores and Joy Zamora on the affirmative side. The proposition was “Resolve that mining be banned in the Philippines”. COEd won the U-wide debate contest. Winners received P2, 000 and a trophy while an amount of P1, 500 and a trophy were given to the runner-up. Raizza Amor Alapar, the team leader of COEd, bagged the Best Speaker and the Best Debater awards. “Holistically, it molded me to become responsive. I was informed socially with the different topics in society and it really helped me to develop myself”, Alapar said.
