Engr. Bruce Sharp, Ph.D. of the University of Melbourne recently accepted the invitation of the Recoletos de Bacolod Graduate School (RBGS) to be an adjunct professor in the University of Negros Occidental.

Dr. Sharp is a consultant in Hydraulic Engineering of NISARD (Negros Island Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Foundation Inc.). NISARD is a non-profit foundation established as a result of a an agreement between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to make Negros Island the “Organic Food Island of Asia.”Through the linkage of the RBGS (Recoletos de Bacolod Graduate School) with NISARD, as initiated by Dr. Michelle ML. Jalandoni and Dr. Maia V. Ramos, NISARD agreed in principle to have Dr. Sharp conduct lectures and field training with UNO-R engineering students. Mr. Edgardo “Boyet” S. Uychiat of NISARD together with Dr. Sharp, met recently with UNO-R President Fr. Dionisio C. Cachero,OAR and Dean Cristopher G. Taclobos to discuss a long term educational program between Professor Sharp and the College of Engineering.Professor Bruce Sharp was once connected with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which is world renowned for its numerous Nobel Prize awardees. Dr. Sharp will likewise assist UNO-R establish educational linkages with Australian universities as well as with international-based hydraulic engineering related institutions.

Bayan –Muna Partylist Representative Satur Ocampo visited UNO-Recoletos campus and gave a talk to students during a forum on good governance held at the university auditorium last January 29.  He presented to the students a different perspective at looking at politics and governance in the country.  He also invited the students to be vigilant against the massive graft and corruption during this May 2010 polls. The forum was well-attended by students from the Colleges of Nursing, Arts and Sciences, Education, and Business Education.

UNO-R hosted the NOPSSCEA Teachers’ Day and awarding ceremonies, where A-Teacher Partylist Representative Mariano Piamonte was the guest speaker.  Rep. Piamonte spoke to hundreds of teachers about the state of Philippine education in the country.

Atty. Ulpiano Sarmiento gave a seminar to employees of the university last Febraury 12 at the President’s Hall. Attended by no less than 300 employees of the university, Atty. Ulan not only gave simple explanations about educational laws but also entertained the audience with his antics. The half day forum was beneficial to all the employees of the university.

February 19 was a busy day for the office of Student Affairs.  Dr. Anthony Golez visited the campus and launched his book on disaster Preparedness.  In a forum attended by Nursing, Medtech and Business students, Doc Golez talked about his stand as Pro-life and he strongly said that he is opposed to the reproductive Health Bill that is pending in Congress.  As a medical practitioner, he stated that his duty is to protect life, especially the life of the unborn. He distributed copies and personally signed his books to the participants.

In the afternoon, the office of student Affairs in cooperation with the UNOSSGO held another forum on good governance.  The affair was graced by 4 national figures who were part of the Hyatt 10 incident.  The speakers were Butch Abad, Ms. Dingky Soliman, Mr. Avelino Cruz and Danilo Bitay Lacson.  They appealed to work for change and to really discern before they vote.

Liberal party supporters talk to students of UNO-R

The Recoletos de Bacolod Graduate School sponsored a forum with  the LGU’s at the UNO-R Little Theater last March 05, 2010.  The guest speaker was National Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzalez. He spoke about the preparedness of the country and the LGU’s in cases of disaster and calamities.  His visit was strongly opposed by militant organizations, who staged a rally outside the University.

Also, RBGS Public Administration and Governance Department, headed by Dr. Romeo Tinagan, sponsored a gubernatorial and vice-gubernatorial forum at the UNO-R Instructional Media Center (IMC) March 12. Only Mr. Lito Coscolluela and running mate Dr. Elumba graced the occasion.  They talked about their governance strategies which not only benefited the graduate students but undergraduate students as well.

Mrs. Kate Gordon visited the campus in behalf of her husband Sen. Richard Gordon.  She spoke to the students about the possibility of replicating the Subic experience in the whole country.  She discussed the need for the young people to get involved in the political affairs of the country.  The young people should not be passive but an active force in political governance.
