September 12, 2018, at 1:00 PM in the UNO-R lobby, Team Affirmative and Team Negative attempted to prove themselves and disprove the other on whether or not “Online Education is as effective as Formal Education” during the Debate tagged as “Debattle: a battle of Reasons”. After the opening formalities, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Annabee M. Claur gave the welcome address while Mrs. Ma. Judy Legaspi, ARGDEB instructor, gave the rationale, mechanics, rules, and criteria of the debate. Mrs. Legaspi also explained that the term Debattle was coined by Ms. Kathleen Balboa while the phrase “a battle of reason” was conceptualized by Carmen Jesusa Legaspi. Arts and Sciences Student Council (ASSC) Governor Carmen Jesusa Legaspi introduced the Board of Judges. The judges were Eugene Adiong, Dr. Al Z.M. Cruz, and Atty. Reena May Reliquias, CPA; the moderator was Sir Jude Rosales. Team Affirmative is composed of Charles Gabriel Gelotin, Kayla Grace Arribas, and Krisha Marie Semillano while on Team Negative were IT Senior students John Rey M. Gamotin, Jess Patrick Francis S. Quiatchon, and Christan Shane D. Plaza. Adiong gave insights for the revival of debate at UNO-R, for he was once a debater of UNO-R. Director for External Affairs Dr. Carlos Legaspi, Jr. gave the closing remarks. The winners were then announced shortly with the added note of “having defended their points and their side”. Team Affirmative bagged this year’s Debattle championship while one of its members, Gelotin, was the Best Debater and Gamotin was named “Best Speaker”. The whole event was sponsored by Recoletos Online Learning Extension project (ROLEx) and organized by the Mass Communication ARGDEB class under Mrs. Legaspi. (Bianca Cababahay, BSMC 1)
